Sorry for not posting wolf logs last week. I took the weekend off for a fishing trip with my grandson. I am also preparing for the Working for Wolves program this weekend, we will be making Grizzer a pond and getting some gate systems set up. I won’t have time to process video for Youtube until Sunday night, so thanks for understanding.

It's been quite a week, as you may know, the pups were born early and we brought them on site last Friday. Aidan was very stimulated, frequently licking in response to a probable hormonal surge. Aidan was very protective of the pups, and looks like he has the skills to be a good pack leader to the pups. In honor of the new pups, we are featuring a pup photo for each wolf. Aidan was famous for sleeping on staff pillows.

I would like to introduce our newest ambassador wolf, nicknamed Peanut by staff. She is a black color phase assumed to be the Great Plains subspecies of the gray wolf. She has so many similarities to Nyssa. This will be an exciting time to watch them grow and develop personalities. Yes, she is already 5 pounds, with her whelping date estimated at April 4th, she would be 16 days old today. We included more details of the pup socialization process and video in Youtube that shows a young, but robust pup.

The Working for Wolves crew did a fabulous job filling in the concrete for Grizzer's pond. Grizzer actually dug the hole, we hired contractors to shape it and the Working for Wolves crew poured the concrete. There is video of the pond, although with the snow and cold, we haven't had time to fill it. When staff went into Grizzer's enclosure with the smell of pups on their clothes, he began salivating and was very excited. He then rolled over and submitted for the staff. Prolactin hormone is stimulated again. We chose to feature a photo with Grizzer and Nyssa photographed in 2004. Grizzer and Nyssa were not littermates, but interacted very well. Grizzer was 7 days older than Nyssa. We have a very similar situation with Peanut and Bolts.

Malik is the only wolf that showed limited salivation when presented with the smell of pups. He was a lower ranking wolf, and that may influence his response to pups. Other than the pups, Malik had a hard week when the pond

While the rest of her pack is romping around, Mackenzie seems content to just lay in her pile of straw and watch. She spends most of her time sunbathing, stretching out on her back and soaking in the rays. When she does get up and play, however, there can be no doubt as to who is in charge.

Malik was observed initiating several play bouts with the pups this week. He and Shadow have been involved in several dominance bouts which have been extremely noisy, but harmless so far. They seem to escalate as Maya and Nyssa are sorting out their dominance issues.
