Lucas was known for his striking sea green eyes.
Lucas was born between April 17 and April 20, 1993. He was raised with pupmates Kiana, Lakota, and MacKenzie. With Lucas being the only male, he found himself on the fringe of his packmates’ female dominance and would often be observed standing and watching activity rather than joining in. As his pupmates matured, their eyes changed to the classic yellow/amber color seen in most wolves. However, Lucas’s eyes continued to glow a bluish green, reminiscent of ocean water. This striking feature stood out and earned his likeness a spot in several National Geographic projects. He was retired in November 2002, joining his packmates Lakota and MacKenzie, where they lived a relaxed life as a pack of three for several years. After a drastic decline in mobility, the decision was made between wolf care team members and veterinary consultants to humanely euthanize Lucas due to quality of life concerns. His bright gaze is remembered fondly by all who met him.

The International Wolf Center uses science-based education to teach and inspire the world about wolves, their ecology, and the wolf-human relationship.
