Grayson, along with his littermate Axel, are arctic gray wolves (Canis lupus) born at a facility in Canada on May 2, 2016 and came to the Center on May 25, 2016. Grayson appears to have a broader skeletal structure and a rounder face in comparison to Axel’s more sloped muzzle. Grayson has always been very observant of his surroundings within his pack structure and beyond the Center’s enclosure. He is often the wolf to start chorus howls and bark howls at any intruders or perceived threats.
Arctic wolves’ native habitat is found in the northern regions of North America as well as along the eastern and northern shores of Greenland. Several large islands occupy this region including Ellesmere and Axel Hieberg islands. This region is typically snow-covered for most of the year, but a mid-June to mid-August thaw supports enough plant material to feed the arctic wolf’s prey: musk-ox, caribou, and arctic hares.

The International Wolf Center uses science-based education to teach and inspire the world about wolves, their ecology, and the wolf-human relationship.
