Did enclosure check, noticed wild wolf tracks on back side of outer perimeter fence, this could explain the long bouts of howling heard from the captive wolves early in the morning. MacKenzie sure looks like she's defending her territory.

Shadow has truly changed his personality since the pup introduction. He used to be very timid around strangers and somewhat stand-offish with some of the wolf care handlers, even bark-howling at people he didn't know. Lately, he's been very accepting of all of the behind the scenes visitors and program participants and has willingly accepted […]

lakota – Aug 10, 2004 12:00 AM

Lakota seems to usually start the pack rallies in the morning. She is demonstrating less bark howling than she did in earlier weeks, but still seems to be focused on activity in the main enclosure. Even though she still gets dominated by Lucas and MacKenzie, she does manage to defend a deer carcass without trouble.

She is constantly at the fence peering into the main enclosure. She is beginning to grow her winter coat in and frequently stimulates MacKenzie to chase […]

Written by Workin' For Wolves program participants Susan Meyers and Ann Briem: Maya showed interest in the Workin' For Wolves crew by approaching the fenceline to investigate upon our arrival. Upon completion of work in the main enclosure, the Ambassador pack was released from the holding pen. Maya displayed searching behavior by locating enrichment items […]

Intern Adrienne W. wrote: Mackenzie showed a lot of submissive behavior Sunday morning. Between 8 and 8:15 am, she had her tails so far between her legs it was to her stomach, Lakota style (Lakota is the omega – bottom ranking pack member). Both yearlings were close to her at that time and all wolves […]

Shadow had several episodes of threat display howling at the Pups at One Year group. He takes is job as pack leader seriously. It's difficult to calm him down when he gets this way, the best wolf care staff can do is distract him.

Richard W. Gould (wolf nanny) writes: Typical wolf behaviors observed this week included: jaw sparing, aggression related to food, full head shakes with "prey" items, caching, scent rolling, and howling to the adult pack. Malik showed submission to Lucas (our resident male) at the fence by rolling over and exposing his belly while Lucas whinned […]
