Grizzer was a prodigious icon of the International Wolf Center.
Grizzer and his littermate, Maya, were born on May 5, 2004. They were raised alongside their pupmate, Nyssa. Grizzer matured into a strong and big adult wolf, acting as the second-raking male under pack leader Shadow. Despite this, his early lack of discipline toward Denali, a juvenile pup, led to the younger male eventually testing Grizzer’s status. He was retired from the Exhibit Pack in March 2011 after the tragic loss of his littermate, Maya. It was determined that Grizzer had been losing confidence in his status and without the support of his dominant littermate, he couldn’t compete with his younger packmates. During the summer of 2011, an additional habitat was created to allow Grizzer more space and to interact with the other wolves through the fences. Grizzer welcomed many former pack members into retirement: Luna, Aidan, Boltz, and Denali. Grizzer was humanely euthanized on January 27, 2022 after a rapid decline. The necropsy report revealed a likely cause of congestive heart failure at 17.5 years of age. His iconic personality and legacy as the Center’s oldest ambassador wolf lives on.

The International Wolf Center uses science-based education to teach and inspire the world about wolves, their ecology, and the wolf-human relationship.
