SUMMARY
The International Wolf Center (IWC) is an educational organization that uses science-based education to teach and inspire the world about wolves, their ecology, and the wolf/human relationship.
All IWC employees are expected to represent the IWC in the most positive manner with all members of IWC’s community and to interact effectively with IWC’s diverse group of staff, board members, volunteers, interns and partners. We expect all IWC employees to uphold the organization’s mission, adhere to organizational standards of objectivity and scientific accuracy in all program activities, and hand confidential information with tact and discretion.
POSITION SUMMARY
By collaborating with the Education Manager and other staff, the Intern and Volunteer Supervisor will oversee the International Wolf Center’s education interns and volunteers. Primary responsibilities include hiring and supervising interns at the Interpretive Center in Ely; recruiting and supervising volunteers in Ely and the Twin Cities area; and coordinating volunteer events and activities. Additional duties include assisting with day-to-day operations of the Interpretive Center like interacting with visitors, answering phone calls and emails, and serving as manager on duty.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Percentages are very general but give the best indicator of approximately how much time should be spent in each category.
Supervision of interns 30%:
- Hire, supervise, and mentor education interns in conjunction with the Education Manager.
- Coordinate with the Education Manager and Education Specialist to train education interns.
- Conduct regular observations and performance reviews with interns.
- Direct and supervise intern projects and tasks.
- Create and maintain schedules to provide adequate coverage for all programs and roving.
Supervision of volunteers 30%
- Build capacity for volunteers and develop/support volunteer leadership in Ely and Twin Cities.
- Recruit, interview, and onboard additional volunteers in Twin Cities and Ely areas.
- Assist in the creation of new volunteer job descriptions as needed.
- Coordinate with appropriate staff to schedule and train volunteers in other departments.
- Administrate volunteer database (Volgistics) and moderate volunteers in learning management system (Brainier).
- Regularly review and update the volunteer handbook.
Planning and coordination of volunteer events 20%:
- Work with lead volunteers and other staff to plan and prepare for annual volunteer events like the Minnesota State Fair and Blueberry Arts Festival in Ely.
- Serve as main point of contact for IWC volunteers.
- Regularly communicate with IWC volunteers through the creation and distribution of the Howler, a volunteer email newsletter.
- Travel regularly to the Twin Cities area for events (Minnesota State Fair, Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, etc).
- Coordinate staff/volunteer coverage in booths and events that IWC participates in.
- Identify and plan for additional volunteer events that best serve IWC’s mission.
Interpretive Center operations support 10%:
- Interact with, educate, and assist the general public as needed or assigned.
- Coordinate program arrangements and details with the Education Manager, Education Specialist and other staff.
Administrative duties 10%:
- Respond to email inquiries and telephone calls.
- Enter appropriate program data on calendars and program trackers.
- Process expense vouchers for personal IWC credit card.
- Provide “manager on duty” coverage of the Interpretive Center when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working in an environmental education or similar setting.
- Leadership experience in managing interns/volunteers.
- Effective and efficient written and oral communication skills in fluent English.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Capability and willingness to fill any knowledge gaps with self-directed learning.
- Ability to work independently and follow protocols with a low level of direct supervision.
- Ability to create, manipulate, and utilize spreadsheet, database, word-processing and email programs and utilize basic internet applications.
- Required to maintain current First Aid and CPR certification and valid driver’s license with no restrictions other than corrective lenses.
Preferred:
- Experience developing and working with volunteer leaders.
- Knowledge of presentation software programs and hardware associated with presentations.
- Post-secondary education in biology, natural resources, or related fields.
- Experience scheduling programs and using online registration software and volunteer databases.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Able to travel regularly, sometimes in extreme conditions or remote areas.
- Availability to work a varied schedule that may include weekends, evenings, and some holidays.
- Able to sit, stand, walk and lift/carry up to 30 pounds.

The International Wolf Center is dedicated to educating and inspiring people worldwide about wolves, their ecology, and the relationship between wolves and humans. Located in Ely, Minnesota, the Center attracts up to 40,000 visitors yearly. In addition to watching our resident wolf pack and exploring the Discover Wolves! exhibit, visitors can also engage with the local ecosystem through our outdoor adventure programs.
The Center offers two wolf education internships each year: a summer term and a year-long term. The specific timing of these internships may vary based on programming needs. A degree in environmental education or a related field, along with prior teaching experience, is preferred for applicants.
Interns are expected to commit to 40-45 hours per week, which may include weekends and holidays. Additionally, interns must possess a valid driver’s license and a social security number. Selection criteria will be based on education, experience, references, and written statements. Unfortunately, the Center is currently unable to accept international applicants.

This internship program aims to provide interns with a solid background in wolf information and the experience needed to effectively share this knowledge with the public. Interns will conduct a variety of indoor and outdoor education programs focused on wolves and related topics. Each program may cater to as few as two participants or as many as 200, with durations ranging from 30 minutes to three hours.
Summer interns primarily engage with the general public, while year-long interns will have the opportunity to work with visiting school groups, scout groups, bus tour groups, family weekends, and adult programs. Additionally, interns will contribute to the Center’s programming through special projects and support tasks. These projects will be selected based on the intern’s talents and interests, as well as the current needs of the Center.
Other areas of training include program development, scheduling visiting groups, exhibit cleaning and curation, and possibly some time spent in retail, office, and information departments.
The International Wolf Center offers off-site housing for summer interns along with a monthly stipend of $1,000. The year-long position does not include housing but provides a stipend of $2,000 per month. All interns are responsible for their own food and transportation between the International Wolf Center and the off-site housing. Interns may need to share living quarters with other interns.
