U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Withdraws Proposed Rule for Nonessential Experimental Population of Red Wolves in Northeastern North Carolina

For more than 30 years, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners have been working to conserve and recover the red wolf. Today, the Service is announcing the decision to withdraw the 2018 proposed rule to replace the existing regulations governing the North Carolina nonessential experimental population (NC NEP) designation of the red wolf under section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Based on recent court decisions involving the NC NEP and having considered public comments submitted in response to the 2018 proposed rule, the Service determined that withdrawing the proposed rule is the best course of action at this time.
